Understanding the Symptoms and Causes of Pain in the Elbows, Wrists, and Hands
The first step to treating your elbow, wrist, and hand pain is understanding what exactly is happening in your body to cause this pain and discomfort. How would you describe your symptoms? A “low-and-slow” pain, or a sharp, shooting pain? Have you recently noticed symptoms, or has your discomfort been increasing over time? Besides pain, are you experiencing tingling, numbness, or limited movement in your elbows, wrists, hands, or fingers?
While pain in the elbows, wrists, and hands are often associated with a one-off injury after a sudden fall or twisting of the joint, symptoms may also manifest over time, from long-term stress on the area, repetitive movement, and existing conditions.
The following section overviews common causes of these symptoms. Whether you have previously received a diagnosis for the following conditions, or you are looking to identify the cause of your pain, a diagnosis and customized treatment plan is waiting for you at Hands-On Physical Therapy!
What Underlying Issues and Injuries Cause Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Pain?
Below are four common causes of pain in the elbows, wrists, and hands. If these causes and explanations do not fit your symptoms or circumstance, don’t worry! Connect with one of our certified physical therapists to uncover the underlying issues behind your pain and find the right physical therapy treatment for you.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
A widely recognized diagnosis for chronic arm and hand pain, carpal tunnel syndrome affects 1%-3% of the USA population. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway in your wrist, housing nerves and tendons, including the median nerve responsible for controlling finger movement. When compressed, it may cause numbness, tingling, weakness, pain, and general discomfort in the fingers, hands, and arms.
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome:
Similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the cubital tunnel inside the elbow. It’s associated with excessive pressure on the elbow, repeated bending, and fluid buildup. Causes include injury, infection, or existing conditions (synovitis, bursitis, gout, lupus, etc.).
Bursitis:
Mentioned as a cause for cubital tunnel syndrome, bursitis is a standalone condition causing pain, swelling, heat beneath the skin, and restricted range of motion in affected joints. Bursitis occurs when a fluid-filled pouch called a bursa becomes inflamed. Repetitive movement, excessive pressure, injury, or infection may cause bursa inflammation, leading to compression.
Arthritis:
Possibly the most well-known condition for elbow, wrist, and hand pain, arthritis affects roughly 25% of the population. Arthritis refers to general joint inflammation, including 100+ specific types like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, infectious arthritis, and condition-related arthritis (psoriatic arthritis, lupus arthritis, lyme arthritis, etc.).
Diagnosing Your Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Pain
Whether your pain is linked to an injury, medical condition, or chronic strain on your elbows, wrist, and hands, Hands-On physical therapists use specialized, advanced diagnostics to find the exact underlying source of your pain. We then devise a customized treatment plan tailored to your individual symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle for long-lasting pain relief.
What can you expect with your diagnosis and treatment plan? Every Hands-On Physical Therapy patient receives a medical history analysis, followed by a physical examination evaluating reflexes, muscle strength, and sensation.
